Choose your character!
Matt's goggled eyes were glued to the television set as he played Super Smash Brothers on his Nintendo Sixty-Four. He had recently aquired the game from one of his teachers for getting an A+ on his latest exam. Matt didn't care though, he didn't like doing all these things, but as long as he got his video games, he didn't care.
He fiddled with the controller, sailing through the first level with ease. This game was hardly a challenge, but he liked to amp up the level and play on as difficult a level as possible. Right now he was on the hightest level of difficulty, but the game was still easy. He blew through another level, wondering what game he would pick up to play next.

Mello stood in the doorway of his and Matt's room watching the other boy play yet another video game he didn't know the name to. He wondered how playing these games so much didn't become redundant and mundane as he bit into a fresh bar of chocolate.
"Rotting your brain again I see, don't you ever do anything constructive?" Mello stated from the doorway then made his way over to Matt. He doubted the boy heard what he said, so wrapped up in his game, to Mello it didn't even look like he was enjoying himself. He let out a sigh as he directed his attention to the fighting characters on screen.

Matt hardly noticed someone enter the room. Though he knew if anyone did enter, it would only be Mello. No one really had good enough reason to bother him, and if anyone but himself or Mello ever entered the room, Mello would probably throw a fit. His friend might be a bit over-emotional, but it was that kind of truth that he admired in a person. At least he wasn't a robot, like that Near was.
Matt sailed through another level, beating character after character, knowing all of them by heart since he had already played so many games. He glanced up shortly after beating yet another level. "Hey." He said, returning his gaze to the screen. This game was easy, but it was the newest thing he had right now. Matt's fingers flew over the buttons. He had this controller memorized the day he first put it in his hand, he didn't even need to look down.
After a few more moments he beat the game, unlocking one of the secret characters. "Perfect." He muttered. Not once had he died in the game. If Matt ever got old enough and went to Las Vegas in America, he would make a killing on video poker. That didn't appeal to him, but it was a prospect if he ever needed money.

Mello rolled his eyes, he should have known better than to try and talk to Matt when he was playing. "..Hey to you." he said sitting on his bed, arms and legs crossed with his back against the wall. "I about killed myself this morning walking down the stairs, damn Near. He left some stupid toy car lying there. Don't ask how I know it was him, because who the hell else would do something that idiotic?" he was getting all worked up again, and a slightly paranoid thought crossed his mind. 'Near left it there on purpose for me.' The fleeting malicious thought made him smile briefly at the ridiculousness of it.
Mello bit off another piece of his chocolate, letting it slowly melt in his mouth. The scowl he wore on his face lightened slightly at the taste of chocolate across his tongue, although the feeling of wanting to wring Near's neck still remained.

Here it was, his Near rant for the day. It seemed Mello had nothing better to do than hate Near. Matt himself didn't mind the white haired boy, but for some reason his mere presence in the house put Mello on edge. When it came to who would one day succeed L, he didn't pay much mind to it. He knew that Near was too cold and Mello too emotional, but if they worked together [which would never happen] they could be formidible.
Matt didn't care. As long as he got to be with Mello, that was what mattered. "You should look where you walk. I don't want you to get hurt." He said cooly, as he put away his game and walked over to his bedside table, opening the drawer and pulling out his Game Boy. Donkey Kong was his game of choice now. "You think he has it in for you or something?"

An icy glare was sent Matt's way along with the wrapper of Mello's chocolate bar. "Of course Near has it in for me! I don't walk around blindly, that thing was placed strategically so I wouldn't see it and break my neck!" He was now sitting straight up in his bed, hands gripping the edge of it. Mello wasn't even taking into account that it was probably there by accident and that his situation could have happened to anyone in the house. Every time he thought of Near uncontrollable anger would flare up, along with slightly irrational thinking. Mello wanted to break something, more preferably someone.
"He doesn't show it but you know behind his mask of innocence there is a conniving little demon!" Mello spat his words, hate dripping from each one. "Don't you dare take his side Matt..." he said more quietly. The thought of losing Matt to that white haired brat was more than he could handle.

Matt pressed the buttons on the game pad as he moved through the levels in his Donkey Kong game. This too, was an older game. He couldn't wait until he was an adult, that way he could make money and buy all the newest games. He saved his game and turned off his game system, giving Mello his attention. Matt fully understood that Mello had an inferiority complex, but he also knew Mello couldn't be L's true successor until he overcame that.
"Calm down. I'd never take his side over yours. I'm always at your side, you know that." He muttered as he shook his head. "Do you need something to drink? I can see if we have chocolate milk, or I can make you some. That will help you calm down a bit." He offered. Mello just seemed so high-strung lately.

Sighing deeply Mello loosened his grip on the side of the bed and looked up at Matt. "Yeah yeah I know... Sorry to doubt." Mello stood before the other, looking down at him slightly, the red head could always calm him down without even really having to do anything; for that Mello was grateful. Sometimes he didn't know how far out of hand things would have gotten if it hadn't been for Matt.
A smile spread across Mello's face, "Now about that chocolate milk you were offering.." he said happily, latching onto Matt's arm and half dragging him out the door towards the kitchen. "I'll take whip cream on top too."

Matt sighed. "Whatever." He said calmly, moving to grab Mello's hand. It was a habbit he had picked up. Whenever he went somewhere with Mello he would naturally grab the boy's hand, or let him latch onto his arm. It seemed Mello wanted to latch onto him today. The fourteen year old made no sound of objetion and moved out of the room, down the hall. Other children were in their rooms, playing with one another, learning through everything they did, each one of them hoping to be L's successor.
Matt didn't care in the least. He only wanted to be a successor because Mello did, and he would always be there to back Mello up, even if it was just from the sidelines. "I'm in the mood for some cereal." He said lazily. Cereal was one of his favorite foods because it required the least amount of effort to make. His favorite was the kind with that tiger on the box.
